Conception
Indus Earth was established in 2000 to combat the neglect of coastal communities in Pakistan. Under the patronage of H.R.E. Princess Sarvath el Hassan and the trustees, the interventions were rapidly established in the designated areas.

Early Days
Work began in earest in 2003 in mubarak village. where Indus Earth introduced wind mills, wind turbines, hand pumps, dug wells, washing platforms, and twine for fishing nets. In this year, Indus Earth introduced community based organizations to its programs.

The next year, IE expanded to 28 villages in Deh Allahbano, Sindh, establishing hand pumps and rain water reservoirs as well as initiating drip and pitcher irrigation schemes which use saline water. Demonstration orchards were grown to show agriculture' economic viability and the program has become a successful means of alternative income generation.

 

 

Recent Programs
In 2005, a water management scheme was launched in Lasbela which produced Gabion Check Dams and more efficient water channels that increased crop yield by 100%. This year also ushered in the first Integrated Area Upgrading Project in Village Abdullah which has been active up to the present. programs include the insatallation of solar streetlights community latrines and wind turbines.


2006 saw introduction of incierators to burn rubbish as a waste management program. project in this year which intorduced smokeless stoves to 25 villages, reverse osmosis plants which brought clean drinking water to ten locations, and contributed to the rebuilding efforts after the October 2005 earthquake, as well as continuing to work to bring wind turbines, solar streetlights, solid waste management, waste water treatment, and wate supply schemes to coastal villages.

 

 

Current Project
Indus Earth has launched several new projects in 2007, thes include a family health clinic, a bamboo and rammed earth school house, a microfinance initiative which offers solar powered mock kerosene lamps,

and Social Safety Nets, which awards grants and provides skills traning and support to the ultra-poor. Indus Earth is working now to begin a drought mitigation and protection program in Balochistan as well as taking an active role in the relief efforts for those affected by the recent floods.
